Alma Hernandez, MPH

Alma Hernandez was born and raised in Tucson, AZ. She has her Bachelor of Science degree from The University of Arizona, where she majored in Care Health and Society, along with a minor in Public Health. She earned her Masters in Public Health at the University of Arizona and has further Public Health training from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Alma is a member of the Arizona House of Representatives and represents District 3 in Tucson. She works in healthcare consulting and is a part-time faculty at the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation for the Healthcare Policy and Innovation course.

She sits on the Health and human services and Federal relations committees and is a board member at the Jewish family children’s Services of Southern Arizona and is the Vice-Chair of the Healthcare taskforce for The National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators. As a part of her humanitarian work as a Public Health professional, Alma traveled to developing countries, including Ghana and Panama, where she helped provide medical and public health services through free clinics. At home in Tucson, she worked with Powersource Tucson as the program coordinator of Bridging the Gap, a program that helps women living with HIV/AIDS. She led Arizonans United for Healthcare working to defeat the repeal of the Affordable Care Act being a voice for the underserved, uninsured, and underrepresented. She was recently named among the top 50 most influential Jews in the country.

Alma has received the following awards for her work on healthcare policy and advocacy as a legislator: Walk the Talk Award from the Arizona Medical Association for her efforts on Vaccinations. The Realtor Party Champion from the Arizona Association of Realtors and the Tech Ten Legislator from the Arizona Technology Council for her work on Association Health Plans, which now allows associations to offer health care to their employees at a reasonable price.
