What are the fundamentals of computing?

This computer class covers introductory skills of computer necessary for almost any job or personal use of computers including familiarization with an operating system, what it is and why it’s important, common computing terminology, software and hardware navigation, computer file management and quick shortcuts for navigation. With this solid foundation in computer literacy, you can complete tasks much more quickly and effectively to make your professional and day-to-day life easier.

Practice makes perfect! This course will be taught from your computer, which will give you the opportunity to put your new skills to action while taking the class. The introduction to computers does not use textbook materials, but instead allows you to watch course videos online, and access free readings and quizzes online. In order to take this class, you will need access to a computer with a web browser and a reliable internet connection.

This computer class will get your started all of the components you’ll need to know to gain confidence in running several functions on your computer.   • Determine what operating system you have; each computer has its own operating system, whether you have a personal computer (PC) or a Mac.   • Manage multiple windows; If you’re new to computing, or new to the system you’re working on, working on several things at once can seem overwhelming! Learn how to toggle between several different tasks on your computer with ease so that you can get to the most important task at hand.
  • Use keyboard shortcuts to perform tasks; Keyboard shortcuts make it easier to navigate around your computer and run simple, commonly used functions within a program like Word or your internet browser. Learn the shortcuts that best help you operate even faster on your computer.
  • Navigate the Start menu to locate programs, files, and settings; the Start menu can be like a home base for the functions that you seek to perform on your computer. Learn how to get to your menu and how to look for the program you need from your computer.
  • Create files and folders; Learn how to store your files in your computer so you can easily find them and even share them later.
  • Organize files and folders; have you ever rearranged your furniture or the supplies on your desk? Learn how to do the same with the files within your computer, so that you can easily move items from one file to another and find them in the future.
  • Delete and restore files and folders using the Recycle Bin; learn to take care of your computer and rid yourself of unneeded items that may clutter or slow your computer.
  • Take a screenshot; ever wish you could show someone exactly what you’re looking at on your computer? Learn to take a screenshot so you can do just that by taking a photo of your computer display with your computer.

Dr. Brent Scholar is an Instructor in the Faculty of Leadership and Interdisciplinary Studies at ASU. He is an experienced higher education professional. He is also the principal of Scholar Consulting since 2009, providing international leadership consulting and training for both nonprofit and for profit organizations.
