Participants in this GRI Standards Certified Training Course will become familiar with the GRI Standards 2021 Update, the first and most widely adopted global standards for sustainability reporting.
Using a combination of video lessons, interviews, case studies, and readings, this course will cover:
- How sustainability reporting promotes organizational change
- The GRI organization and its overlaps other standards and frameworks
- Key terms, features, and structure of the GRI Standards
- How to engage stakeholders inside and outside your organization
- Material topics, impacts, boundaries, and targets
- Preparing and communicating a sustainability report

What you'll receive:
If you complete this course, you will earn a Certificate of Completion from GRI. Our course completes two out of four courses required before you qualify to take the optional GRI Professional Certification Exam. This course covers the topics of Introduction to sustainability reporting and the GRI Standards 2021 update as well as Reporting with GRI Standards 2021 update. If you choose to pursue GRI Professional Certification, the remaining 2 courses on Human Rights and the Sustainable Development Goals can be completed online via GRI Academy (note: these courses cost additional money to be paid directly to GRI). All participants in our course will automatically receive a 25% discount on the GRI Certification Exam if you choose to take the exam.

Rajesh Buch
Senior Global Futures Scientist, Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability and Innovation
Business Development Director, Rob & Melani Walton Sustainability Solutions Service, ASU
As Director of Business Development in the Rob and Melani Walton's Sustainability Solutions Service, Dr. Buch drives ASU’s efforts to co-create transformative solutions for global sustainability challenges by linking ASU researchers to funding agencies, and by fostering partnerships with the public and private sectors, foundations and NGOs. Dr. Buch has taught courses in Sustainability Assessment, Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventorying and Introduction to Ethical Circular Economy. He holds a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, an MBA from ASU’s W.P. Carey School of Business, and a Ph.D. in Sustainability from ASU’s School of Sustainability.
Ryan M. Johnson

Ryan Johnson is the executive director of professional sustainability education and training in the School of Sustainability at Arizona State University – the first degree-granting school of sustainability in the U.S. In this role, Ryan helps organizations and individuals meet their sustainability goals through custom training programs, open-enrollment (non-degree) programs and partnerships.
Prior to joining ASU, Ryan spent more than a decade at Arizona-based WorldatWork, an organization that delivers HR certifications and trainings to professionals worldwide. His last position at WorldatWork was Vice President and Executive Editor. Earlier in his career, Ryan was a client-facing consultant with both the Institute for Strategy Development (ISD) in Washington DC, and with Creative Healthcare Solutions (CHS), of Columbus, Ohio. In the early 1990s, Ryan completed a graduate degree at ASU and subsequently spent seven years at ASU’s Morrison Institute for Public Policy. Ryan began his career on the staff of the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Small Business.
