Course Overview

This course focuses on how to strategically manage the supply chain that sources goods and services required for an organization to meet its strategic objectives. This means aligning supply chain objectives like optimization of speed, innovation, dependability, flexibility, cost, and quality with the organization's strategic objectives. We will explore various ways companies can meet supply chain objectives - development of procurement strategies, evaluating suppliers, leveraging technology, and leading the procurement function effectively. 


What topics will be covered

  • Recognize the role of procurement in a supply chain management context and examples of tasks performed in this function.

  • Identify key market drivers of industrial competitiveness that form a given organization’s corporate strategy.

  • Identify key considerations in selecting suppliers that meet a buying organization’s needs, then evaluate existing and new suppliers based on these criteria

  • Identify how different financial factors impact sourcing decisions.

  • Identify different supply chain technologies and their applicability in procurement to achieve a firm’s supply chain objectives.

  • Evaluate the application of dynamic pricing and e-procurement strategy to achieve a firm’s supply chain objectives.

  • Explain how leadership attributes, styles, and goals impact an organization's ability to achieve supply chain objectives.

Professor Oke

Professor Oke holds a bachelor of civil engineering degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, an MBA (with distinction) from Cardiff University’s Business School and a Ph.D. in Operations Management from Cranfield University’s School of Management, U.K. where he was also faculty for six years. He teaches courses in technology and innovation management, operations management and global supply chain management.

His research focuses on innovation management practices in manufacturing, service and supply chain organizations. He is also interested in risk management and supply chain disruptions, particularly those emanating from developing country contexts. He has published over 35 academic articles. He was an associate editor of the Journal of Operations Management from 2008 to 2015 and he received the 2007 Best Reviewer Award from the same journal. He is currently an Associate Editor of International Journal of Operations and Production Management and serves on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Supply Chain Management and the Journal of Manufacturing Technology and Management.
