Course Overview

In this course, you will learn concepts and tools related to how a company manages its own operations to achieve its economic and other goals. We will apply basic operations management concepts, like mapping, to real-life manufacturing and service processes, and we will discuss how to manage the different types of manufacturing and service processes that make up an organization, like process capacity, inventory, performance, and sustainability.  By the end of course, you should be able to apply basic operations management concepts to real-life manufacturing and service processes.

What topics will be covered

  • Identify the inputs, resources, and outputs of a manufacturing or service process.

  • Determine the required capacity and/or utilization rate for a process.

  • Classify processes into three types by their defining characteristics.

  • Identify demand and supply uncertainties driving the need for inventory in manufacturing processes.

  • Categorize inventory either by its position in the process or its importance to process success.

  • Recognize inventory-related costs balanced by the EOQ formula.

  • Analyze a process to identify causes of output variance and ways to measure and reduce the variance.

  • Recognize the relationship between cp and cpk values and capable and centered processes.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of sustainability issues and best practices for developing and executing a sustainability approach that addresses these issues.
  • Identify the major environmental and social issues that businesses attend to and describe why these issues are important to business, and how businesses address them.
