What you'll learn:

FCU is a strengths-based intervention that empowers parents to make positive changes to promote the well-being of their children and family. It is data-driven and easy to use. More than 30 years of research shows that the Family Check-Up is effective and proven to reduce children's problem behaviors by improving parenting and family management practices. The course participant will learn about the three-session Family Check-Up process, which includes: an Initial Interview, a comprehensive Child and Family Assessment to identify needs and strengths of the family and a Feedback Session, which involves the provider and parents collaboratively setting goals for follow-up services, such as the Everyday Parenting program. Participants in the EDP e-learning course will learn about the Everyday Parenting intervention model. EDP is a research-based, tailored family management support program. It targets three primary parenting domains: supporting positive behavior, setting healthy limits & building family relationships.


Learning Objectives:

The learner will be able to describe the Family Check-Up model in terms of basic strategies; identify the theoretical models underlying the Family Check-Up which explain its effectiveness; learn about the research and outcomes supporting the Family Check-Up and learn how to collaboratively set goals for follow-up services for those who receive the Family Check-Up. After completing the Everyday Parenting e-learning course, the learner will be able to describe the three parenting skills in the Everyday Parenting Program; identify seven practices for working effectively with parents to build their parenting skills; and be able to list the four steps of the Everyday Parenting teaching model.


What you'll do:

The Family Check-Up course has five modules. Each module includes didactic content as well as opportunities to practice components of the intervention model. It will take you approximately 6 hours to complete the Family Check-Up e-learning course, depending on the number of practice activities that you do. At the end of each module are questions to self-assess your learning. The Resources section of this e-learning course contains the materials you will need to complete the practice activities, as well as additional information about the Family Check-Up. Links to some of the resources are also provided for you on certain pages of this course (as needed) as you proceed through the course modules. Learners in the EDP e-learning course will learn how to use the Everyday Parenting Program as a tool to support parents' development of effective family management practices. The Everyday Parenting e-learning course has five modules (the 5th module of FCU and EDP are the same) that introduce the learner to the Everyday Parenting program, which supports the development of parenting skills that are critical for effective family management and positive child development. This e-learning course will take you about 5 hours to complete. The FCU and EDP e-learning courses will be accessible to you for one year from the date of your registration. The FCU and EDP e-learning courses are only an introductory training for the FCU and EDP models. Who this course designed for:

The Family Check-Up and Everyday Parenting programs can be used by any provider or caregiver who works with families and their children ages 2 to 17. Providers working with parents or caregivers of children and adolescents between the ages of 2 through 17 in clinics, schools and other community-based settings can use both FCU and EDP as a tool to empower parents or other caregivers to make changes as well as support parents’ or caregivers’ development of effective family management practices. Examples of providers include administrators, mental health professionals, doctors, nurses, paraprofessionals in any field working with families and/or other caregivers and their children ages 2 to 17, professionals working in the legal system, professionals working in the foster care system and others. Examples of caregivers other than parents include (but are not limited to): foster parents, legal guardians and grandparents.


What you'll receive:

The learner will receive 6 Continuing Education (CE) Credits for FCU and 5 Continuing Education (CE) Credits for EDP from the American Psychological Association (APA) for a total of 11 (CE) Credits.

Links to handouts used in the e-learning course are provided in the e-learning course as the learner proceeds through the course and on the Resources page in the e-learning course.The EDP e-learning course also includes a workbook that will be provided as part of the training and e-learning course.


Course information:

Depending on which training option is chosen, the learner will be participating in either in-person trainings or live webinar trainings after both e-learning courses are completed. Both the FCU and EDP e-learning courses must be completed no later than the evening before either the first in-person training or the first live webinar training. Location and time of the in-person trainings will be based on the availability of in-person training dates scheduled by the REACH team and the availability of the learner. The live webinar trainings will take place through the computer and the date and time of the live webinars will be based on the availability of the live webinar training dates scheduled by the REACH team and the availability of the learner.



People Involved


Dr. Thomas Dishion

Dr. Dishion was one of the developers of the Family Check-Up and conducted numerous randomized control trials demonstrating the effectiveness of the Family Check-Up. Dr. Dishion was previously the director of the ASU REACH Institute, which promotes Research and Education to Advance Children’s Health.


Dr. Anne Marie Mauricio, Implementation Scientist

Dr. Mauricio is an Associate Research Professor and Implementation Scientist at the Arizona State University REACH Institute. Her research interest is on the translation of evidence-based interventions for delivery in real world settings. In addition to her work as part of the FCU Implementation Team, Dr. Mauricio is actively developing the scale-up capacity of the Family Check-Up model.


Monique Lopez, Director of Data Collection Activities and Intervention Training Coordinator

Monique Lopez supervises data collection for all clinical trials at the ASU REACH Institute. She is also the coordinator for intervention trainings and implementation assessment systems, including those related to the Family Check-Up.


John Lipfert, Technology Support Analyst

John Lipfert supports all ASU REACH Institute projects on their technology needs. John maintains the websites, handles information security, and makes sure the multiple IT systems used to monitor Family Check-Up implementation and outcomes are integrated and functioning optimally. John also maintains the ASU REACH Institute data servers, workstations, laptops, and printers.


Yasaman Parsi, Implementation Coodinator

Yasaman Parsi, ME.D, M.C., LAC is the Implementation Coordinator for The Family Check-Up Program at REACH Institute. She is a licensed mental health counselor who has worked as an educator and therapist with individuals, families and groups in multiple agency settings such as La Frontera-Empact SPC and MISS Foundation.


Dr. Anne Gill, Consultant

Dr. Gill is a Counseling Psychologist at the University of Pittsburgh and a clinical supervisor and workshop facilitator for the FCU. Trained as a family therapist, she strives to provide high-quality, accessible, respectful, and culturally sensitive services to families and children.


Dr. Kevin Moore, Consultant

Dr. Moore is an Intervention Scientist, Research Associate at the Child and Family Center, Prevention Science Institute, University of Oregon, He has 30 years of experience in researching, implementing, and consulting on evidence- and principle-based treatments.


Juliana Weaver, Consultant

Juliana Weaver is a Family Support Supervisor at a home visiting program in Virginia. She has a Master of Arts in Psychology and has worked for 9 years at the University of Virginia using the FCU Model. She is a Family Check-Up Model workshop facilitator and consultant with the ASU REACH Institute.


Tracie Stufft, Consultant

Tracie Stufft is a family therapist at the University of Pittsburgh, working with families using the Family Check-Up Model for over ten years. She is also an FCU workshop facilitator. She has a Master of Science degree in Child Development/Applied Developmental Psychology and has worked as a child and family psychotherapist for 20 years.


Adriana Chung, Consultant

Adriana is a licensed social worker and early childhood educator. She is a Family Check-Up trainer, consultant and provider. Adriana has been using the Family Check-Up Model to support diverse families with infants and toddlers. Adriana has provided individual, group and parent-child dyadic therapy across various clinical settings.


Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a mental health provider to be trained in this model?

No. Any provider of services to families with children ages 2 to 17 can be trained to deliver the Family Check-up and Everyday Parenting.


How long do I have to complete the e-learning course?

Depending on the training option that has been chosen, you will have until the evening prior to your in-person or live webinar trainings to complete both the FCU and EDP e-learning courses. The earliest you will receive access to both e-learning courses is 3 weeks prior to the in-person or live webinar trainings. This gives you approximately 3 weeks to complete both courses.


Will I be allowed to participate in the in-person training or live webinar training if I have not completed my e-learning course?

The REACH team will be monitoring the e-learning courses’ progress and therefore will not allow trainees to participate in the in-person trainings or live webinar trainings if both the FCU and EDP e-learning courses have not been completed the evening before the first in-person training or the first live webinar training.
