About:

The Project Planning & Management workshop is aimed at helping individuals new to project management apply knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to help make projects successful. It is a basic course in understanding Project Management tools and techniques in a hands-on approach.


What you'll learn:

  • List the phases in the Project Management Process. Establish a Planning Structure with a planning team and project governance inclusive of understanding the role of the sponsor and stakeholders.
  • Plan a project through the creation of the Charter Document, a Resourced Schedule and a Project team structure.
  • Create work breakdown structures. Establish project work estimates as individual packages of work and as rolled-up deliverables
  • Identify essential team members
  • Utilize a project team structure that enhances sponsorship engagement
  • Create a project business objective statement
  • Evaluate and communicate project constraints

About the instructor


Warick Pond, Assistant Vice President

Warick is the Assistant Vice President for the Planning and Programs team. In his role at ASU, he works with diverse teams resulting in the successful implementation of the tools, techniques, and methodology being utilized by the UTO to assess, prioritize, manage, and monitor the hundreds of active projects comprising the institution’s IT portfolio. With ten years in higher education and seven in the private market, Warick brings an unique perspective to building a PMO. His most notable programs include managing the technology efforts for Starbuck's College Achievement Plan, and eAdvisor Tracking which won Information Weekly's Top 500 Technology Innovators award. Warick oversees these efforts as well as coordinating the UTO’s strategic planning processes as a member of the UTO leadership team. Link to full bio

What are PDUs?

PDUs stand for Professional Development Units. PDUs are the measuring unit used to quantify your professional development as part of PMIs Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. 1 PDU = 1 hour of learning/activity.

How do I claim my PDUs for these courses?

If you have a PMI number and you completed the course, ASU will submit your eligible PDUs for you. You should receive an e-mail from PMI.org indicating you have successfully submitted your PDU request. The e-mail will be sent to the address you have in your PMI.org profile. To claim your own PDUs please see PDU submission instructions.

When reporting PDU activities, is any supporting documentation required?

You do not need supporting documentation to report PDUs and renew your credential. When reporting your PDUs through CCRS, you will be directed to include specific information about the activity in the PDU claim form.

NOTE: PMI recommends you maintain a personal folder for all PDU-related documentation and keep this documentation for at least 18 months after your CCR cycle has ended. If you are randomly selected for an audit, you will need to provide this documentation

Is there an exam for completion of the Planning and Project Management Workshop?

No. While there are formative and summative exercises to gauge learners aptitude of the skills being learned, there is no exam required to earn the certificate of completion

Is the Planning and Project Management Workshop a certificate program?

No, it is a hands-on engaging practitioner’s workshop to gain applicable skills that can be immediately applied in any work setting. Participants will earn a credentialing badge but this program is separate from the Project Management Certificate program.

What is the difference between Scrum vs. Traditional Project Management?

Traditional project management emphasizes on conducting detailed upfront planning for the project with emphasis on fixing the scope, cost and schedule - and managing those parameters. Whereas, Scrum encourages data-based, iterative decision making in which the primary focus is on delivering products that satisfy customer requirements.

Do I have to attend both days?

Yes. Attendees who do not attend both days will not receive course completion credit, PDUs or be eligible for certification.

What do I need to bring?

All materials will be provided for you. You do not need to bring any materials, devices or laptops.
