What you'll learn:
Welcome to Hollywood gives students a broad overview of the entertainment industry by examining the “product life cycle” of filmed entertainment products (i.e. movies, television shows, new media, etc.). This semester is a special opportunity to case study WOMEN IN FILM, featuring visits from female filmmakers and executives, giving participants the opportunity to ask questions of the guests. Class is based at the ASU California Center in Santa Monica, CA. Additionally, students from ASU’s Tempe campus join via video conference.

Meet the instructor
Adam Collis, Professor of Practice in Film Directing
Adam Collis is a filmmaker and film professor whose mission is to connect students with working Hollywood professionals and to help them start their own careers. As a film professor, Collis has taught general production, cinematography, advanced directing and thesis film courses for the University of Southern California, Loyola Marymount, Brooks Academy, and, most recently, Arizona State University. His dedication to connecting his students to Hollywood inspired the creation of several programs, notably the video-chat/screening series, Hollywood Invades Tempe!, which has hosted over a dozen major Hollywood filmmakers including Bennett Miller (Moneyball), Richard Linklater (Boyhood), Bryan Burk (partner, Bad Robot/JJ Abrams), Larry Franco (producer of Anonymous and 2012) and many others. Another program, Anatomy of a Feature Film, gave ASU film students the chance to speak directly to the key creative and business minds behind the hit film, Juno, including everyone from director Jason Reitman to Fox Searchlight president of production Claudia Lewis. Collis also facilitated the ASU Industry Guest Lecture program, bringing major Hollywood producers and thought leaders to Tempe such as three-time Sundance award-winning producer Ted Hope.
