Story-telling: actualizing and activating personal statement and digital portfolio tools for post-graduate life
We all tell stories; stories help us make sense of our worlds and ourselves. We tell stories to help ourselves make sense of where we are, where we want to go, who we are, and who we want to be. We tell stories to make, ascribe, and ascertain meaning. It only makes sense that as we think toward embarking on post-collegiate life, we imagine our future selves and craft plans to help us to actualize and activate these selves. Also, we are likely going to need to convey our stories to potential graduate programs and employers. When students work on telling these stories via personal statement and portfolio, students engage opportunities for reflective processing, milestone achievement recording, education planning/mapping, and career plan formulation. Via these tools, we are better able to and better equipped to connect with personal career and academic goals; and, best-positioned to manage the engagement, refinement, and attainment of these goals.
