Exploring Character-Driven Leadership

4 January

  • Introduction to the ASU Leadership, Diplomacy and National Security Lab
  • Overview of Policy Design Studio
  • Introduction to the tenets of Character-Driven Leaders and our model
  • Discussion of the Leader in Me concept
  • Discussion of the Environment I Lead In concept
  • Practical Exercise—students diagram the Environment they lead in

5 January
Focus—VALUES

  • Discussion on the concept of Values
  • Examine personal Values, Organization Values, National Values
  • Practical Exercise #1—Students identify and discuss their personal Values.
  • Practical Exercise #2—Students identify the Values espoused in the Declaration of Independence

6 January
Focus—ETHICS

  • Discussion on Ethics—focusing on key concepts of authenticity, Selfishness vs. Selflessness, Self-discipline, Justice, Duty, and Competency
  • Examine personal ethics and organizational ethics
  • Practical Exercise—examine the ethics of kneeling during the National Anthem at a NFL Game

7 January
Focus—LEADERSHIP

  • Discuss the core elements of Leadership
  • Explore examples of Character-driven leaders (Gabby Gifford, Barbara Barrett)
  • Character-driven leadership - Foreign Service Officers
  • Practical Exercise—How do leaders build TRUST?

8 January
Focus—CAPSTONE CLASS

  • Virtual Monument Walk examining the Character-driven Leadership and Innovation of President Lincoln, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, President Franklin Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt
  • Concludes with Student discussion of how they will apply the Character-driven leadership tenets to their leadership journey
